Deserted metropolises of the world – video + photo gallery
The simplest thing anybody can do to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 is stay at home as much as possible. Luckily, many people are doing so, leaving the outside world almost completely empty. Watch the world’s busiest cities become a zombie apocalypse setting.
Index collected and put together a bunch of recent video footage from Getty Images showing the most popular cities in the world. It is shocking to see London, Moscow, Paris, Barcelona, New York, Los Angeles, and Miami almost completely cleared out. What are usually the busiest squares and streets on the planet are now almost completely empty, with only a few people hanging around.
Watch the video below:
What about Budapest? The same. Our beloved capital seems just as empty as the other global cities. Check out our gallery filled with beautiful photos of the deserted Budapest taken by Hungarian photographer Tamás Rizsavi.
In the gallery, you may recognise familiar places in Budapest, like the iconic Chain Bridge, which is usually full of tourists, but now, it is completely empty. You can also spot the ever-so-crowded means of public transportation (like Metro line 4), which are usually full of busy locals getting to and from work every day. It is a weird feeling, seeing your home basically become something out of an apocalyptic zombie movie.
On a more positive note, it is good to see that people take the threat of coronavirus seriously. The more of us stay at home, the better. Experts have been emphasising the crucial importance of social distancing during this pandemic. What is social distancing? Johns Hopkins Medicine writes that social distancing is “deliberately increasing the physical space between people to avoid spreading illness. Staying at least six feet away from other people lessens your chances of catching COVID-19.” Some forms of social distancing include working from home, keeping in touch with your loved ones online, or cancelling all of your personal meetings.
